Radio Advertisements – Good Idea Or Not?

Radio Advertisements – Good Idea Or Not?
By Eric Herskowitz

Radio is popular form of advertising, but is it economical? I am going to look at the pros and cons of this type of advertising and you can make the ultimate decision yourself. The positives: Advertising on radio is effective because it reaches a large amount of potential customers quite easily. Several businesses have a radio playing where their clients can hear it. For example, a restaurant filled with people during lunch hour that plays the radio. When a commercial plays, every person in the place will hear that ad whether it be consciously or subconsciously, reaching several people in a small amount of time.

Radio advertisements are also unobtrusive because radio listeners know that they will hear the occasional commercials, and often times they are comical which keeps them tuned in. Radio ads allow for a business to be creative. With the right mix of music and memorable voice acting, potential customers will be praising your commercial, enhancing the selling power of the brand. One of the biggest pros of radio advertising is the ability to reach the intended audience. Each radio station has its own demographic of listeners.

The key for a business is to see if that demographic contains the same type of person who would be interested in your product, and air the ad accordingly. The negatives: Technology is the enemy when it comes to radio advertisement. The ability to quick scan and have preset stations on a radio makes it harder for a company to reach the audience with its ad. Many listeners will just switch off the station to another when a block of commercials arrive. Another way technology is hurting is the new ways consumers get their music.

Many people did the bulk of their music listening while in their vehicles. With CD players and mp3 players, it is harder than ever to reach these consumers with radio advertisement, especially with the younger generations. Another con would have to be the clutter that occurs. Radio commercials are typically played in blocks of four to eight. This can confuse and listener making it harder to recall what commercials they heard, and which ads go with which product. That’s me weighing in on the topic. You choose if radio advertisement works or not.
