Editing Poetry

Editing Poetry

If you want to write excellent poetry, editing will be very important. While you might sometimes think your first words on paper sound fabulous, the truth is that editing can make them even better. It’s very difficult for some poets to edit their work while others cut and scratch out constantly, never feeling it’s quite “perfect” yet.

Remember the importance of not using excess words or using clichés. Well, it’s very important that you remember this when you are doing your edits. You need to be sure that every word or phrase serves a purpose. If it does not, it should be cut. You will likely cut quite a bit from your first draft. You will add, cut, rewrite and change many things to get from that first draft to that final product. This is part of the process of writing really great poetry.

Too often amateur poets make the mistake of thinking they can put just anything down on paper and call it poetry. It may sound good to them even if it doesn’t make sense or follow the rules. The problem is that people are very attached to their poems since they express personal feelings and emotions. This attachment makes people reluctant to cut things or make changes.

However, some of these changes are imperative to having a truly good poem. You shouldn’t be afraid to cut when needed to make the poem better. While you may be attached to your poem and the way you have written things, you need to make it so that the reader can understand it and benefit from it or there is really no purpose in the poem.
