Biometrics and Its Types

Biometrics has emerged as a result of advancement in the information technology. It is a method of studying finger prints, facial patterns, and voice recognitions to ensure the safety measures. Biometrics is classified into two categories, namely Physiological and Identification.

There are many types of biometrics available. Finger print recognition, Hand geometry systems, iris recognition, face recognition. Let us discuss each one of them in detail. First type is the finger print recognition. It is the easiest and best method to recognize a person as a primary and accurate identification method. This method can be used along with facial recognition and hand geometry systems too.

Hand geometry is available in two forms. First method is used performed with by scanning the whole hand. And the second is used to scan only two fingers. This method is used world wide for the access control and time or attendance control. The hand recognition systems are extremely small and portable.

Iris recognition is makes use of the camera, to capture the iris image and then turns the image to a template using some algorithms. Then it matches the captured iris image with the image in the biometric database. This method is safe, accurate and is capable of performing one to many mappings with an incredibly high speed.

Face recognition uses series of image or an image obtained from the camera to recognize the person. It works from a long distance and monitor the persons without their knowledge while most of the biometric systems needs the persons to come directly and close to them to recognize their identification.
