In your position have you ever wondered, how am I doing? Think about it, when was the last time you were afforded the opportunity to discuss your performance and future goals. Everyone wants to know how they compare to their peers and desires to be told where their strengths and weaknesses are in the eyes of their leader. If you are never counseled then how are you supposed to know, by rumor, comments by other people that are in the same position that you are, hopefully not.
Counseling has to be a two way conversation of which the ultimate goal is for the person being counseled to improve and discuss future goals. Counseling may sound like disciplinary measures, there may be circumstances when it is but that should be rare. Disciplinary action should be immediate not on a monthly basis. The counseling session should be constructive in nature, discussion concerning where ones strengths and weaknesses are and how to improve on them. You should be very honest and open while also allowing the associate to make comments and ask questions. I guarantee, you will offer suggestions to increase the associate performance and some will want to bring up other associates performance. That should be silenced immediately as you are discussing only one persons future not defend or support others.
The discussion should end with a written appraisal for both of you to sign and have personal copies provided. This provides you with a history of the associate performance level and official paperwork to support future promotions, raises or denial of the same for marginal performance or improvements.
