They tend to be more expensive and more difficult to install. A wireless system operates without wires, obviously; signals are sent via radio. A wireless system is extremely easy to install, in fact many homeowners choose to do so themselves, without the help of a professional. However, there are a few downsides to a wireless home alarm system. For one thing, interference from cell phones and other devices can disable a wireless alarm, and for another thing, the batteries often need to be replaced or at least checked periodically.

Sensors are usually placed at doors and windows. Glass break sensors are typically used for sliding doors and windows. More sophisticated systems feature carbon monoxide and smoke detectors or sensors. There are also flood sensors and even temperature sensors to detect frozen pipes and leaks. Many people who have vacation homes in colder climes are keen to install these types of sensors.

The security system that is right for your home largely depends on the size of your home, your budget and your personal needs. A home with more windows and entry ways requires a more elaborate system as more sensors are needed. Most apartment or condo owners opt for wireless systems that they can take with them if they move.
